![]() We know in alot of songs Texas and Tennesee are refered to often in the lyric's by composer's. My question is this. Can you think of a state ,that you have never heard of mention in a song For intance, I have never heard one that mentioned Oregon? ------------------ |

![]() Don't know about Oregon, but I'll bet Idaho still cringes when Joe Stampley sings about 'The green of Cour'd'd'laine' in "Roll On Big Mama." Wahington State got it's mention in Woody Guhrie's Roll On Columbia back in the 30s. |

Pat Burns Member From: Branchville, N.J. USA |
![]() Jude, how could I have forgotten "Rocky Raccoon"! We could count that as both Dakota's if we have to...I counted both Carolina's as one. ...there's a James Taylor song called "The Millworker" with the line "My grandfather was a sailor, he blew in off the water, my father was a farmer, and I his only daughter...took off with a no-good mill-workin' man from Massachusetts, who dies from too much whiskey and leaves me these three faces to feed...
..and "Kathy, I'm lost, I said though I knew she was sleeping..I'm empty and aching and I don't know why...counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike, they've all come to look for America...." [This message was edited by Pat Burns on 18 September 2000 at 05:41 PM.] |

![]() Bruce Springsteen had a song and album called Nebraska, is Oregon still the hardest to find? In Ireland there is a singer who has been around since the 60's called Art Supple, his trademark is doing a song from each of Ireland's 32 counties in a row. |

![]() I wracked my brain trying to come up with something for Maryland and couldn't think of a thing. Baltimore's made it into a couple of tunes ("Streets of Baltimore" and Roger Miller's "Engine, Engine, Number 9") but not the whole state. It occurs to me that it may have gotten mentioned in Mary-Chapin Carpenter's "Down in Mary's Land", but the title is a reference to St. Mary's County and I don't recall if she mentioned the state. ------------------ |

![]() BJ, Technically, I believe Puerto Rico is a US Possesion and is referred to as 'The Commonwealth of'; as in Massachusetts and Virginia; there are a couple other 'states' I can't remember that also hold this distinction. ![]() Oregon-- "Don't Take Me Alive" by Steely Dan.The chorus goes: "I'm a bookkeeper's son/ I don't want to shoot no one/ Well I crossed my old man back in Oregon/ Don't take me alive" Maryland-- Steve Goodman recorded a pretty Tin Pan Alley tune called "There's A Girl In The Heart Of Maryland." Bob Dylan's "The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll" was about a murder in Baltimore and has the phrase "Maryland politics." |

![]() The New Riders Of The Purple Sage (Buddy Cage on steel although Jerry Garcia may have played on this cut, I'll have to check) have a song called "Portland Woman" ie Portland Oregon. David Bromberg has a song called "New Lee Highway Blues" that starts off: There are also a few songs about the Oregon Trail and the Columbia River which borders Oregon and Washington (which is also where I spend alot of time windsurfing |

![]() Illinois: Dan Fogelberg had a song out by the name of "Illinois". All I can remember was the chorus: "Illinois! Oh, Illinois!" (Not much to go on, eh?) New Jersey: How 'bout the big band number "Jersey Bounce" (Joan Cox plays a pretty hot version of that on steel). Puerto Rico: How 'bout Leonard Bernstein/West Side Story: and... ![]() Townes Van Zandt's White Freightliner Blues mentions New Mexico in one of the verses. Goes something like 'New Mexico ain't bad girl, the people there treat you kind'.... Though I think it would be more of a challenge to find a song with New Mexico in the title. |
