![]() Does anyone know anything about steel player Kenny Norman? As far as I know he was a native of California and his main claim to fame is playing with Ole Rasmussen & The Nebraska Cornhuskers.. (some of you may have noticed I'm rather obsessed with this group), where he replaced Billy Tonneson while Billy served in the Armed Forces. The word is that Kenny was a great talent, but joined Ole's band after their Capitol contract and thus didn't record with the group. On the Western Swing newsgroup on Yahoo there's a rumour that he "Kenny ended playing for Billy Jack Wills in Sac. Any thoughts on this? ------------------ |

![]() This may be a coincidence.... I knew a Sonny Norman..Played at the Rose Bowl Lounge in Urbana Ill. He owned the place... He's real last name was Dearth. He has a son his name is Kenny. I don't know if he goes by his dad's stage name or Birth name... Last I knew he was out West.. Sonny died, his Mom lives in Chanpaign, Ill.... If it's the same one.... ------------------ |

![]() It's gotta be a different Kenny Norman than the one form Urbana (Sunny's Boy) Kenny "Norman" (used to use his dad's stage anme when I played with him) Dearth called me from Colorado a couple of months ago, he was not playing very much lately. I don't think Kenny would have been old enough to play with Bob Wills...or had even been playing steel yet at the time of Bob's death. I still play the Rose Bowl in Urbana every Sunday night, Sunny's picture still hangs on the wall on stage, he was a killer guitar player, and his son is no sloutch on steel either! |

![]() the Kenny I'm curious about would have most likely been born circa the early 1930s, he was old enough to replace Bill T. in the 'Huskers' in 1953 or so, and as I mentioned before he was apparently hot stuff. |

![]() Jason, Hearing Kenny's name brings back great memories..I was friends with Kenny , and he was playing with Ole, at the Harmony Park Ballroom in Anaheim ,Ca. Used to go every nite I could when I was in port. He did harmony stuff with Earl Findley on guitar, and Kenny Cannon on trombone... Such a great band Ole had.. I knew Kenny died, but did not know the exact year... He also had Rocky, Austin, Woody, Joe,Earl Lee on bass, then Glynne Duncan, and Teddy Wilds singing, then Glenn Wilds fronted the band when Ole got in trouble with the law.. Their band rivaled Hank's Brazos Valley Boys..Great music... RP 'come on in' |

![]() The Capitol recordings of Ole's band are compiled on a great CD by the Bear Family label in Germany. Apparently there's some airshots by the band led by Teddy Wyld's brother (I think) and Kenny might be on some of those. |
