I tried to find Steel Guitar Tribute songs that include lyrics about Steel Players and/or imitations/sound examples of famous players. So far I have only found three of them:

1) Eddie Hill - "The Hot Guitar" (1952)
2) Bobby Black - "The Black Brothers in Guitar Haven" (which is patterend after "I Dreamed Of A Hillbilly Heaven"
3) United Steels of Europe - "Steel, Steel, Steel"

Does anybody know any other songs?

Thanks, Walter

The only one I can think of right now is a song about Ralph Mooney on his "The Toppa Sessions" CD, written and sung by Gene Davis, steel by the man himself.

"Cowboy Peyton Place" - Doug Sahm and the Texas Tornados.

Text sample:

I just came in this bar for a beer
Didn't know that country band was playing here
'Cause I'm in love with the steel player's wife
And I know it's not right
But I want her tonight
And that's how it is in Cowboy Peyton Place.

Not exactly a tribute, but pretty close, don't you think?

this one might work:

Son Volt - Windfall (from "Trace")

"Switching it over to AM
Searching for a truer sound
Can't recall the call letters
Steel guitar and settle down
Catching an all-night station somewhere in Louisiana
It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven"

Song has some steel in it as well....

the best one devoted to steel, hands down, is "hot steel" by tiny murphy from about 1951, in which he sings the praises of speedy west, joaquin murphey, and jerry byrd and then plays in the style of each of those players.

the only other one i can think of that is devoted to steel is "steelin' is his business" by rex allen, with jerry byrd (early 50s). rex sings about jerry and jerry does all the playing. no imitations of other players.

there are a lot of songs that mention steel guitar in the title or lyrics, but they generally aren't specifically about the steel, aren't "tributes", and don't contain imitations of players.

others in this vein are more devoted to standard guitar players:

country guitar by phil baugh (early 60s)
country guitar too by phil baugh (early 70s)
the hot guitar by ted brooks (early 50s)
springfield guitar social (bill wimberly with thumbs carlille, early 60s)

been a long time since i heard it, but "the wild guitar" by jack rivers (early 50s) could be an example and may have tommy sargent on steel.

George Morgan's tune -- was it called "Hey, Mr. Ting-a-Ling Steel Guitar Man" with Little Roy Wiggins?

And another one -- I want to say Moe Bandy --with a chorus that ends "...and a steel guitar in a dim-lit bar knows exactly how I feel."

How about Pete Drake's "I'm just a guitar, everybody picks on me"? Steel not mentioned as far as I can recall, but it's obviously a steel doing the "talking".

Incidentally, just yesterday a guy asked me if I could make my steel talk "like that guy did on the record."

I wrote and recorded a steel tune several years ago. The hook line was : When asked to dance I say no thanks, thats not what I came for, I just came to hear Jody play his pedal steel guitar. I plan on re-recording the song in Feb. with a female vocalist singing the "girl" part. Jody.

I think the lyrics were written by Merle Travis, one of the earliest versions with vocals comes from Speedy West (early 50's)...

Hello.
In the book "The International Steel Guitar Discography" there is a page called "Songs about the steel guitar".Some of these are probably what you will call a "Tribute" song. Some of the titles are neat,or what do you think of these:
A steel guitar and a glass of wine-Paul Anka,
Blue steel-Loretta Lynn,Sweet steel guitar-Lanny Ross,Gabriel doesn`t play the steel guitar-Scooter Lee/Autry Inman,Santa`s got a brand new Pedal steel-The Barnshakers,That cheatin`stealin`steel guitar man-Dave Rich.
There are more too.
Sincerely,
Egil.

Actually Merle Travis himself recorded a vocal version of SGR already in the late 40's, and Pee Wee King recorded it several times in the 50's, right Roy Ayres???
And funny thing is ( a bit of tooting my own horn here!!! ), that I was watching this thread and didn't even remember we recorded and released "Santa's Got A Brand New Pedal Steel" until now that Egil mentioned it!!

Can't find "Hot Steel" anywhere. Quite obscure... even for the record lady.

I saw Russ and Jimmy do Steelin' at ISGC.

My christmas song I just posted is a steel tribute, but I just realized I made no lyrical mention other than SLIDE on home for christmas. But you should ge the idea.

I guess for the new version I'll add :

" I'll glide on down, it's not to far
and make her sigh with my steel guitar."

The lyrics to SGR are on Robbie Turners CD titled "Man of steel". Our late great Johnny Cash sang them. I might add that Robbie picks the heck out of it too!!! Robbie also recorded a song titled "Blame it on the Steel" from his "Steel Country" CD. Great c6th playing from Robbie as well.
