Pete Drake was born in Atlanta. He once played in a band with Jerry Reed, Joe South, Roger Miller, and Doug Kershaw. He went on to become one of the most recorded steel guitarists ever. For many acts, Pete Drake was the producer who made their records hits.

Now, the newly-formed Georgia Steel Guitar Association thinks it's time to put Pete Drake in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

Dozens who attended the Northwest Georgia Steel Guitar Show yesterday signed a petition that will accompany the nomination the association will submit.

Steel greats like Lynn Owsley, Billy Robinson, Smiley Roberts, Larry Sasser and Russ Hicks are writing letters in support of the nomination.

If you'd like to stand up and be counted to give Pete his due, write it below. You don't have to be from Georgia to speak up. If you have a Pete Drake story, tell it. If he influenced you in some way, tell it.

We'll copy this forum thread and make it a part of the official record as part of the application.

Thanks for your help

Hall of fame for Pete Drake?
Of Course.
I've listened to his style on various Don Gibson and some older Jim Reeves stuff and there was some great steel playing there. I found it incredible that such a busy producer come come up with such great ideas and playing. You have my vote for what its worth.

You can count my vote too ! Pete did much for the steel guitar. Be it in playing, recording, producing, or whatever. Maybe he didn't invent the talking steel concept, but he made it the most famous ! That reason alone Makes him a solidly qualified candidate for the Georgia music hall of fame !!!!

I also vote for Pete,he played a lot more PSG than most folks know,a super comercial player, not just the signature Drake "lick" that most people recognise.

Pete Drake played on numerous HIT RECORDS as they used to call them out of Nashville. He is often a very underated player and overlooked.

The man paid his dues and then some. Sometimes, "the height of genius is simplicity." The late and Great Jimmy Day said that, not me. Feelings and emotions poured out of litle Pete Drake's steel guitar and he did help sell alot of records.

He was one of my earliest influences and I for one never tire of some of his great steel licks and rides on some of those Hit Songs. He done alot for Steel Guitar and for the Country Music World.

So he gets my vote all the way. If you don't recollect some of the hit songs he played on, just go back and listen to some of his steel guitar artistry on recordings by George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Jim Reeves, Porter Wagonner, Bill Anderson, Roy Drusky, David Allan Coe, Lynn Anderson, etc., etc.

GOD bless you all, and listen real close and you'll hear the sounds of a steel genius, Pete Drake. Maybe he knew something that the rest of us overlooked for sometime.

Which among us worked with Pete? Stole a lick from Pete? Which Pete Drake licks will ring through history? Whose careers might never have happened were it not for Pete? That's what the Georgia Music Hall of Fame needs to know. Let's hear your stories!

Pete Drake,
along with Ralph Mooney are the most recorded steel players in country music history, although PF is gaing ground.
Pete played on everything Billy Sherrill produced who was the number one produer in Nashville for 20 years. Pete Drake made all those George Jones records have the feeling the George was giving the vocal. Pete Drake made Johnny Rodriquez a star, as his very first hit Pass Me By hit the radio with that unmistakemakable intro with Johnny Gimmle playing twin, which wasnt heard in the context until then.
Pete Drake played on Charlie Rich's Behind Closed Doors and about a million other number one smash hits.
Now here's a story. The great Buddy Emmons was leaving a session while Pete was walking in the studio and Buddy played some wild solo that nobody could probably play in a million years. And Buddy ask Pete if he could do that. Then very quitely Pete pulled out a wade of hundred dollar bills and fan them at Buddy and ask Buddy if he could do that.
Pete belongs in any country music Hall of Fame Period.

Pete toured on the road for a while as a featured act, I had three friends who made up his road band. He and his band were also in a movie that featured Merle Travis, Minnie Pearl and a young Earl Richards, Titled Nashville Rebel(?), Not sure of the title. Harley Alsup is the only member of that road band that I know how to contact. I think Harley may have pictures and such, he saved everything from his musical Career. If you need his phone # email me and I will give it to you.

Pete deserves to be the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

Pete was one of the busiest people and most "in demand" musicians I've ever known. He was not only a major influence on the music scene but promoted and mentored countless others in the industry. I was one of the fortunate ones to get the benefit of his wisdom and experience. His arranging for me to work with Charlie Rich on the road was a big turning point in my life and I was honored to play the licks he created for Charlie's hits.

Pete was a true pioneer and trail blazer and I'm in good company by saying that I miss him.

Earlier in my musical career as a percussionist(drummer that knows music and music theory!), Pete Drake was the first steel guitarist that brought the instrument to my attention. The "talking" steel guitar, thought of as a gimmick by some, actually brought the instrument as well as Pete's talent to a new light for the masses. Pete's accomplishments in the music industry fit the requirements that ANY Hall of Fame would require. Being a native Georgian makes his uniquely qualified to be in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. The GMHOF currently has Pete's guitar and amplifier on display. It's time to induct the man behind them into his well earned place as a member.

He has my vote!

His tasty background playing for George Jones, Tammy Wynette and countless other singers will always be among my all-time favorites!

Kind Regards, Walter
