The Alabama Steel Guitar Association will induct Julian Tharpe into The Alabama Steel Guitar Association Hall Of Fame. The induction will be Sunday, February 26th, 2006 at The Hank Williams Museum, 118 Commerce St., Montgomery Al. Julian will be inducted at 2.00. Members of his family will be present. The ASGA hopes that this is the first step into bigger and better things for Julian Tharpe for all he did for the Steel Guitar. The ASGA, (THE ALABAMA GANG) invites all of Julian's friends to be present and witness this induction. This is the first major function along with the Super Jam for the ASGA.

Bravo to your organization for doing this! To honor Tharpe in this manner speaks volumes about the character and integrity of your members in looking beyond what others have dwelled on in their judging of this outstanding musician and player.

Tharpe no doubt has to be considered as one of the all time greats of the pedal steel guitar.

Well deserved for Julian. I've always thought he was 20 years ahead of his time. He played things years ago that players, including myself are still fooling with from time to time, trying to play today.

Billy, I agree with you my friend. I've heard Julian come off with some of the fastest single string riffs. It was mind blowing to me that anyone could play like that.
Mr Bill Cook, you have my respect for what you are doing for a well deserved Steel Player.

Thanks to the Alabama Gang.
Julian was and still is one of my all time favorite players. He did things his way, and it worked for him.

I was lucky enough to meet Julian in January '79, along with his son Greg. Greg recently contacted me. I'm extremely happy that Julian is finally being recognised. He was Zane Beck's favourite player.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Julian, but just how he did some of those licks was, IMO, simply amazing. I wish someone had a video closeup of his right hand, doing his own "speedpicking". I keep hoping that a CD will come out featuring more of his music. What's the big hold up?

I saw Julian at St. Louis Guitar Convention
play Danny Boy, and never used a pedal or knee lever. But if you wasn't looking you
would think he was using pedal.

Bill, this was a great first choose. I think He had the "real universal tuning". Could that cat pick or what. I still listen to his music.

I met Julian for the first time at the 1969 DJ convention in Nashville. He was playing a D-10 MSA guitar in the MSA room at the Hermitage Hotel.
I met Julian for the second time at the DJ convention in 1971. Chuck Wright had just deliverd a S-12 11 X 6 Wright Custom Guitar to Julian. Within a few months Julian moved up to a S-14 PSG.

My family and I just returned from the Alabama Steel Guitar Associations first show and the first two inductees were Don Helms and my friend and mentor the late Julian THarpe. It was a Great Show with lots of super talent!

Julian was truly one of the greatest steel guitarist who has ever picked the instrument we all love!

The Alabama Steel Association got it right and now it's time to get Julian in at St. Louis at the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame!

GOD bless you all!

Terry...you played great and your salute to Julian was excellent. I remember buying my first Julian Tharpe LP in the 70's and thinking how in the world does this cat think and execute the notes he played...very unique and super style.

I was also happy that Bud Carter recieved our first "Pioneer Award" for his creative steel guitar designs and contribution to the development of the steel guitar -- great person!

It would be a delight to many, many steelers I've talked to over the past several years if both Reece Anderson (one of my favorite steel guitarists and neighbor back in Keller, TX) and Julian T. were inducted into the International Hall of Fame. I quess we'll just have to induct Reece into our Alabama Steel Guitar Association Hall of Fame in the meantime!

Bill S....Thank you for making me aware Bud Carter received the "Pioneer Award". Bud is very deserving of that award, and aside from his contributions to steel guitar, he is an exeptional person.

REECE,
Trace your family history back till you find an Alabama connection. If you can't find one, well, we will find one for you. We will induct you into The ASGHOF and submit volumes of accolades on you and Julian to St. Louis. Maybe we can help correct a grave injustice concerning you and Julian. I had the pleasure of meeting you in St. Louis at the 1981 show. You were very kind and gave freely of your time answering numerous questions from a young eager steel player. I have never forgotten those minutes. "Let he who has not sinned, cast the next stone". THE ALABAMA GANG will support you and Julian until "it is done"
Bill

Bill C....I'm humbled you would remember our conversation so many years ago, and I thank you for your exceptionally kind comments.

Believe me I'll do everything I possibly can to find an Alabama connection. Does flying over or driving through Alabama count? Or how about having perhaps thousands of conversations over the past four decades with steel guitar players there......? Let me know if I'm getting close to coming up with something....:)

Those who experienced Julians musical mastery surely agree he would be a very deserving inductee into any Hall of Fame relative to the art of playing steel guitar. I trust his family is fully aware and comforted in knowing of his accomplishments.

Joe C....As we know life takes many twists and turns. A wise man once said...."when you get to the fork in the road of life....take it".

You're of course right, life is not always fair, but I believe if someone who is handed sour grapes remains true to their faith and principals, they will simply make great wine!

I would like to hear any stories about Julian; any conversations that some of the members that had any personal contact with him. Especially information that Julian might have offered about his "tuning" or "pedal set up" or his "thinking" about his great music. I had a conversation with a personal friend of his once, and I just hung on every word. I do consider any conversation I have with anyone private, but it would be great, IMO, if some constructive information could be shared here.

Hi Reece,
Do you remember playing twin pedal steel guitars with Julian at the DJ Convention in 1969. In those days Julian had a crew-cut hair style. Too bad I didn't have a camera with me.

When I finished my set at the show in Montgomery Al. Jullians son came up to me and "said I like the way you play it is the old way of doing it" I took that as a compliment.
