All you JB fans of today and yesteryear...JB backed Williams and other artists. What were some of the song titles. For twenty years he has been strictly Polynesian, and he is great, but it would be rewarding to hear some of his earlier artistry. Anyone able to help? ChuckFender Custom T8 Sierra U12 Diana Oahu |

In addition to his original solo albums on Decca and Mercury, I would definately consider getting the Bear Family release "Jazz From The Hills" by Country All Stars. The band actually consists of JB, Chet Atkins, Homer and Jethro and usually Charles Grean on bass. The music swings like mad, it's basically their interpretation of the Django and the Hot Club Of France sound. RCA released the original recordings in a 10" album and double 45' EP formats, but the Bear Family release includes alot of then unreleased tracks. At least Amazon carries it. Jussi |

Well now.....seems like you've mentioned a name(JERRY BYRD) that's very dear and near to my heart! You can't be all bad, even tho' you're a musician, as long as you recognize Jerry Byrd for everything that he has contributed during his long playing musical career. Now, I'm not boasting....but I feel I do have what possibly could be one of the largest collections of old records on which Jerry Byrd has played. No way could I list them here.....b0b and other Forumites would likely run me off the Forum...... HOWEVER, your question, is what prompted me several months back to solicit interest in what could be (for lack of a better name) the un-official Jerry Byrd Fan Club. I had less than a dozen folks express interest in participating in such a fun-filled and educational adventure....but perhaps, it might be time to make the offer once again. It's primary purpose would be to exchange this kind of information.....hard to find stuff, on the man of steel. Jerry has put out some fantabulous solos and backup work on records of artists you've NEVER EVER HEARD OF, as well as some you have head but possibly didn't realize that Jerry had ever recorded with them. Say what? |

I remember one Patti Page, The Singing Rage; she recorded a song with Jerry titled: How Much Is That Doggie In The Window and Jerry must have had a fun time on that session. Later Homer and Jethro did a parody on it that had a line: "The one with the basketball nose on his face. You know what a basketball nose is, it dribbles all over the place. "I don't recall if I responded to that former post on a JBFC but if I didn't, count me in ! Regards, Paul |

Jussi Charlie Grean was staff bassist at RCA Victor during that era. And to see and hear these musicians was something to behold.Homer Haynes was great guitarist and could play any chord in the world on his big Stromberg guitar,,,Jethro was greater than great and Chet?? what more can be said about these giants. I know,as I was on many sessions with that group of musicians. Iam going to buy that re-issue recording...Thanks for the info |

Speaking of Patti Page.....didn't she do some duets with Rex Allen way back when, like "Broken Down Merry Go Round", "Over Three Hills", "Tag Along" as well as "I Wanna Be a Cowboy Sweetheart" and "DETOUR"? Of course, Jerry Byrd played steel on each of the above. I've added some names to my earlier list of participants. All I have to do now, is get a page up so we can establish some rules and procedures for SHARING whatever. Okay? Thanx for your interest. |

Jody, you're welcome and oh so right about Homer Haynes. If Freddie Green had really quit Basie's band in the 50's, Homer should have been the one to replace him. His right hand work is out of this world. Jussi |

In answer to jeffstro's question about Ernest Tubb & Jerry: "So Round, So Firm, So Fully Packed" / "Don't Look Now""You Hit The Nail Right On The Head" / ? "Answer To A Railbow At Midnight" / "Headin' Down The Wrong Highway" "A Lonely Heart Knows" / "A Woman Wrecked Many A Goog Man" "Seaman's Blues" / "Waiting For A Train" "Let's Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello" / "Have You Ever Been Lonely ?" You can usually find a couple of these on CD compilations, or an out of print Lp. Other than that it's a 78 hunt. |

Thanks, Dave!I also have Don Ho "30 Hawaiian Favorites" CD from the Beautiful Music Company. There are quite a few cuts with JB on it. The only bad part, is that I don't know of an 800# or website for them. The address on the CD is: The Beautiful Music Company 777 Larkfield Road Commack, NY 11725 |

Ray,Where can I order the Hollywood Barn Dance video? As a kid I went to that movie everyday it played in Lima, Ohio. I need to get a copy for my family history library. Also I think it is going to be a very big task to try and find the titles of all of Jerry's recordings. As you probably know he has done over 300 sides with many artists over his career. I have recently put together a discography (which I lost in a recent hard disk crash but do have a hard copy I can get back on my computer) of his very own records and tried to get his help on all the rest and he said it would be impossible as he has no records of the sessions anymore and sure couldn't remember them all. But it would be a great idea if it could be done, or at least get the ones gathered up that certain of you on the forum may recall or have. |

Jussi A tune recorded way back in the 50's with the late great Elton Britt & Rosalie Allen on RCA Victor records. Title " Cotton Candy and a Toy Balloon" recorded NYC 1952.Featured the people you mention above,,,,I played on that session. The money was not great ,,,but lots of Cotton candy and "balloons" Chet, Homer & Jethroe,,Charlie Grean, Bucky Pizzerelli, Tony Mottola and me. Ray thinks he is the only one famous here...I had my name up in lights years ago,,,,,everywhere you went ,,,my name was there,,,I used the name "EXIT"...that was my "handle back then. PS I blew up all the balloons for the recording,,,,now I can hear Ray say,,,,,,sure you could,,,with all that "hot air" He's a wise guy Jussi,,he's always braggin about himself. I made him famous,,and what do I get??? abuse. PS they wanted Jerry for the session,,,but he refused to "blow up the balloons",,,,,Hi Chuck,,,hows that FENDER of your's ??? edited for "hot air" [This message was edited by Jody Carver on 07 December 2001 at 11:44 AM.] |

If you are interested in Jerry Byrd, you should join some Hawaiian steel guitar groups. I belong to a couple and there are pictures of Jerry Byrd in them all the time. There is even one group that you can get along with every couple of years and tour the islands in the company of Mr. Byrd "hisself". They even list the places where steel guiter music is played in the islands by "The Master of Touch and Tone" and others of like passion. Erv |

Okay Jody! It's amazing how you come along every so often and tweak one's mind. Just the other day I had pulled a couple of tunes from my record library in hopes of having someone on the Forum to identify the steel player. Elton Britt was one of the singers and Dolph Hewitt, the other. Both were on RCA and were from that same era as Rosalee Allen and others. Who was the steel man on Elton Britt's early tunes? Like "Loreli" and others in that time period? By chance, WERE THEY ALL YOU? And what about Ernie Lee's "One Little Candle"? Was that per chance, YOU? Break out of your self-imposed shell now Jody, and bring we Forumites up to speed. What are some other bonafide recordings on which you headlined? Blowing up balloons....ain't all bad. Some really big stars had to work as waiters, house painters, drug store clerks and the like. If it enabled you to fulfill your dream of becoming a star....Wonderful! Okay Jody, don't make us all wait. We really do want to know. And, YOU are a star in our eyes. |

Jody " whats that saying about "self praise"?I just don't understand?????? If someone asks you a question about your musical accomplishments, and you take the time to reply, I don't think you are praising yourself or patting yourself on the back. You are simply answering a question. I look forward to your replies on the forum. They are very interesting and informative. But that's OK, I guess you read all this kind of nonesence before. But I would like to share something with you if I may. My friend is a country singer and last week he was visiting his father whom at the time was playing records from his record collection. Now, his father was a singer during the 50s era, and styled after the great Hank Snow. While listening to the music he asked his father who played steel on one song. His father said, "Jody something, I can't remember his last name." This morning he called me and asked if I had ever heard of this Jody character. I said,"Yes, Jody Carver. Ever so often he pops up on the forum". My friend is an unbelieving character. He said, "Nah, not THE Jody guy, the steel player on dad's records? Those guys don't associate with just regular musicians" I told him to come over. I had something to show him. He is sitting beside me as I type this note to you, and is flabbergasted that you take the time to associate with us lessers in the steel guitar community. This is the first time my friend has took notice of any steel player, until he heard the sounds of your steel playing. To him it was always the lead man who got the brunt of the attention. I thank you my friend for opening my buddy's ears. So you see, it's us people out here who are giving you the praise and patting your back, not yourself. You have touched the ears and lives of many people, and you can add today's eposode to your many achievements. You made a NON steeler listen and respect the sound of our wonderfull instrument. Some people are carpenters, mechanics, etc., but to be one of these professions and/or a steel player to boot, we should be proud, for we are truly unique. Jody, make me proud by replying to us formites, for my friend doesn't believe you will. Make him a believer because he is one of your new fans and will be looking for songs you have recorded on. Tomorrow he will be connecting to the internet so he can take part in the forum. And again, when your are playing on the stage and the audience claps, they are giving you praise for doing a good job. You don't stand up and pat your own back, we pat it for you. Jody, please don't take this in the wrong context. We want you, we need you and we respect you for who you are. Respectfull yours Joe Delaronde Add my name to the Byrd fan club. Joe: May I put a big Second on your comments. I too am deeply grateful for all the fun and knowledge I have learned reading Jody's Posts. Some at first may fail to recognize him as the GREAT he really is. In fact I sometimes suspect that he doesn't realize it himself but that is part of his character. I was over at Live 365 yesterday listening to him and Johnny. I close my eyes and the years just fade away. I'm back home in my youth and hearing those sounds once again. I can only hope they are not ANGELIC !!Nope, I'm still here writing.... Regards, Paul |

Joe & Paul......I couldn't have said it as well as you did. I've been hounding Jody for some time now to come forward....and share with us. If there are some here on the Forum that don't choose to participate in this topic or that, so be it. Many of us do look forward to his posts and especially the factual information that he DOES share with us. His, having been there, does make him an expert to a degree and I'll accept that. Jody is a good man! I want to hear his music and can't seem to get him motivated to the point of sharing any of that with me altho' I have specifically asked for same. If anyone else can tell me what songs and records Jody has played on, and with which artists, etc., I'd be very grateful and much appreciative. Thank you Forumites! How about it? |

Jack; What was the name of the group he recorded with that included Chet Atkins and Jethro of Homer & Jethro. Some of the songs I recall were Stompin' At The Savoy and Darkness On The Delta. It may have been the Nashville All Stars or something like that. I had either several 45 Extended play albums or a 33 & 1/3 big disc. That would have to be a collectors item for sure !!Regards, Paul |

The group was originally called "the Country All Stars", Paul. Their tracks were reissued on the German Bear Family label on CD as "Jazz from the Hills". Amazon sells it. Here's the info: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000001B1J/qid=1007948064/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_14_1/002-4986687-3172828 |
