What is the most common tuning for the front neck on a Dual or Stringmaster 8? [I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know which model it is.]I think we have decided on C6 or A6 for the back neck. Does anyone ever use E9th on a no-pedal 8? I see E13th mentioned a lot. I'm going to be helping a friend of mine resurrect and old Fender that he will probably be learning to play modern country music on as well as some old 50's and 60's rockabilly and pop. Also, where do you buy strings in sets for a D8? Or do you guys use a 10 string set? Any info is appreciated. Thanx JO. |

I don't know what's most common, but I alternate between A6 and C6 on one neck (A6 most of the time) and have the other neck in E13. You can order strings here on the forum, I just ordered a truckload of sets myself. Just go here: http://steelguitarmusic.com/strings.html Steinar ------------------ www.gregertsen.com

Thanx, Steiner for the comeback. Yeah, I know strings are available here, but I didn't see anything listed for E13 tuning, and just a couple sets for the C6 8 string tuning. I'm not sure of the gauges needed just yet anyway.Still looking for input on the tunings. Roy, Al, Jody? Thanx JO. |

If you like E9th, it certainly is a beautiful tuning:E B G# F# E D G# E or B Jerry Byrd recorded his Admirable Byrd album in this tuning. I would put "standard" gaguges on there, to give you room to experiment with various tunings. By standard, I mean the gagues are so you can tune up or down by a note or two on any string and still sound okay. I use these: .015 .018 .022 .024 .030 .036 .042 .054 |

I'm with Jeff Strouse on JB's E9.I can do everything I need to on C6/A7 almost ... but that particular E9 that Jeff listed ... well that goes on the outside neck of the few double necks I have. It can be very beautiful ... yet with the top 3 strings bein' 3,5,1 ... you got that open E feel ... A big plus for me ... bein' a single neck fan ... is the gauges of the C6/A7 and JB's E9 are a "perfect match" ... ------------------ www.horseshoemagnets.com |

Jerry - There is a wonderful website called "Brad's Page of Steel" that contains a wealth of information concerning steel guitars of the non-pedal variety. Here's the link: http://www.well.com/user/wellvis/steel.html You will find an extensive list of different tunings and some of the players that use them. There's also a link to a string guage chart. E13 is a very cool tuning used for everything from country (think Don Helms w/Hank Williams) to swing and jazz (Speedy West). E9 might be a good choice for more modern sounding country music. 56 flavors - try them all! ------------------ Tim Whitlock '58 Fender 1000, '56 Fender Stringmaster, '65 Twin Reissue, Niomi lap steel, old Magnatone tube amp. |

C6 on the inside neck for me. A6 or E13 on the outside neck. Probably E13 since A6 tends to be a little too bassy for my tastes most of the time. One of the problems I have with A6, is generally it is played where most every melody note is a "6th" chord.Just one example is when the top note is E (A chord) players will play strings 1, 2 and 4. That sound gets old and boring to me very fast. I know many western swing players use it all the time, but to me I would rather hear the two string melody and harmony played like Jerry does it. So I am probably in the minority when I say I don't care for the overuse of the "6th" sound. To me it tends to take something away from the melody. So if me had me druthers, it would be C6 and E13 with E13 being on the top neck. I guess that is why I loved Roy Wiggins' playing soooo much. Then of course when Jerry came along, I was sold for life. I do like an occassional strum of the 6th chord. Just don't care for it all the time. I love the way Jerry did the strum on "Harbor Lights" and "Cocoanut Grove". carl |

I use a C6/A7 tuning on my inside neck and an E9/13 tuning on the outside neck, but; I also have the C-Diatonic tuning on the center neck and use a (5)-way neck-selector switch, so that I can turn on necks 1 & 2 or 2 & 3 together. If I need necks 1 & 3, I have to turn on all three, or make a fast switch while playing! #3=E9/13: E, D, F#, G#, B, C#, E, G# #2=C-Dia.: C, E, F, G, A, B, C, E #1=C6/A7: Lo-A, C, C#, E, G, A, C, E If I had only two (2) necks, they would have to be #1 & #2. My #2 is my altime favorite. I consider it to be one of Jerry Byrd's greatest contributions to the Steel Guitar!------------------ “Big John” Bechtel Franklin PSG D–10 (9 & 8) Fender ’49–’50 T–8 Custom Fender ’65 Reissue Twin-Reverb Custom 15” http://community.webtv.net/KeoniNui/BigJohnBechtels |

Thanks everyone. Still not straight on the E13 thing though. Looks like guys use different inversions of that tuning. BJB, what gauges do you use on the E9/E13 tuning if I might ask? Thanks JO.
