Returning through the night apres gig, it was old Lefty kept me company through the journey he had such a pretty band , Always Late, Long Black veil etc, my well worn casette has no sleeve notes, anybody know who lapped for him, very Byrd like on some tracks, I'd die to play lap in a Lefty Cover Band ! its the piano! drives me crazy almost pre Ska !

Jim Kelly is mentioned on this page:

From right to left: Lefty Frizzell - vocals, guitar, Leon Rhodes - lead guitar, Buddy Griffin - bass, Bobby Williamson - rhythm guitar & MC, Vic Candis - fiddle, and Jim Kelly - steel guitar. I could be totally off base with this, but; wasn't Curly Chalker responsable for the signature lick on Always Late? (as well as several other recordings, using that same lick)

I received an email from Jo Frizzell about Lefty's steel players:
quote:
Hey Larry,

Lefty worked with many steel players in his career. Here's a few

1958 Gene O'Neal
1959 & 1960 Don Helms

Hope that helps

The CD re-issues I have of the original Lefy and Webb Pierce recordings of "Always Late" and "There Stands The Glass" feature the same lick. They don't list who the steel player/s are. Curley Chalker?
The playing is really great, but who is it? Some of it sounds non-pedal and some pedal.

Have since acquired two more Frizell albums, one of which lists the players, an interesting name name crops up, CB White, very very tasty and untill now unheard of by me, it could not possibly be Howard White could it ? (one of my all time favourites

Here's some info on CB White, taken from a link by W. K. "PeeWee" Whitewing:
http://www.heartoftexasband.com/peeweebio.html
quote:
Curly had cut sessions with Lefty Frizzell such as "Always Late", Mom & Dads Waltz, and others. Curly had replaced C.B. White . He was the older brother of Bob White. The first four tunes recorded by Lefty were hits and the Steel Guitarest was C.B White. I recorded some with Lefty along with Johnny Gimbel, fiddle, Tony Hall,Guitar, Jimmy Dennis, drums, Madge on piano, Blackie Crawford playing rythm and others.

I guess it wouldn't impress anyone if I mentioned that I did work one Road~Gig with Lefty! We traveled to Gettysburg, Pa. for a One~Nighter at a place called Lincoln Logs. He borrowed my ‘favorite pen’, out of my Jacket~Pocket in the dressing~room to sign autographs and never returned it! That impressed me! And I never forgot the trip!

I believe a pre-pedal Jimmy Day is the steel guitarist on "There Stands The Glass".

I'v had Leftys greatest hits for a week now and just cant stop playing it, what I find so satisfying is that at the end of the day they are GREAT SONGS ! with the added attraction of a variety of very tasty lappers, I can feel a Lefty Cover band coming on once I get myself a 'Madge Sutee' on vamp piano, now where did I put that Nudie suit !

Larry.Do you know if the piano player Madge was the same one who played with the Miller Bros.swimg band out of Wichita Falls,TX?
I can't remember her name but have some pictures put away when a girl named Madge was playing piano for the MB's.She was no longer with them when i started with them in 1962 i think it was.
BTW.there never was a Miller in the band.LOL.Tracy

Tracey, here may be an answer to your question about Madge the piano player. It appears that Madge Suttee was one & the same for Bob Wills and for the Miller Brothers Band.
quote:
The Miller Brother's Band out of Wichita Falls, Texas
Bill Jourdan, Paul Wayne, Leon Gibbs, Dutch Ingram, Bobby Rhodes, Jim McGraw, Madge Suttee and Lee Miller

Here is a note from James E. Bagley and part of a quote from him mentioning Madge Suttee:

quote:
A link between Mississippi's Jimmie Rodgers and California's Merle Haggard, smooth Texas crooner William Orville ("Lefty") Frizzell made #1 with both sides of his 1950 debut: "If You've Got The Money, I've Got The Time" (featuring Madge Suttee's rinky-tinky piano).
