I recently saw an Erickson Steel Guitar listed in the inventory in one of the Steel Guitar Retailers. This caught my interest, because I remember seeing a new Erickson steel guitar at Deveaus Music in Fargo N.D. This would have been around late fifties or early sixties. I believe Mr Erickson made them in a small shop in some small town in Minnesota. Who has had one of these? Is Mr. Erickson "still around", and does he still make guitars? I think he was sort of on the "cutting edge" back when pedal steels were just coming into being. It would be interesting to hear something, from someone, about the Erickson Steel Guitars.

Leon, about 3 or 4 years ago, I visited a friend in Bemidji, Minn. and I was introduced to "Elwin" (I believe was his first name) Erickson and visited him at his home. He is indeed a super guitar maker and works out of his garage. He also is an excellent restoration specialiast of old automobiles. (A 1957 Chevrolet Nomad Station Wagon and a 1929 Hupmobile were in this large garage.) I have some picts taken at his place and will send them to you as soon as I find them. He had just "retrieved" a S-12 pushpull when I was there and I played it for some time..It had excellent pedal action and decent sound. A good Wallace TruTone or George L's would have made it better. He was using a locally manufactured pickup I believe. Hope this helps...Email me if you want.

Back in the late 70s, when I was traveling as a Gretsch Rep, I stopped in at Ericksons place in Gonvick, Mn. & spent several hours with Alvin? Erickson, His shop was tiny & surrounded by a lot of old cars, I recall at least one being a 57 Chev,He had just one guitar there, which was purple & I thought was the first one he built, He later distributed some single 10 guitars that were BMIs built by Zane Beck, but had an Erickson Decal, au

I stopped at his shop a couple of times, both in Gonvick and Clearbrook. We'd talk steel, pick a little and talk some more. I played an Erickson single 10 that I borrowed from Ron's Jewelry and Music in Brainerd (while I was waiting for the Emmons student model I had ordered to come in.)

My first steel was an Erickson. I bought it in 1972 as a kid. It was a good "learner". In 1975 he built me another one. It was a great guitar for many years. I still have it and recently sent it to Bobbe. It's beautiful natural birdseye. He "upgraded" it with a new changer and all new underneath, plus new PU. It plays and sounds great. My final payment to Elvin was a '56 chevy I had. He wanted the tranny. I spent a lot of time at his shop in Clearbrook. He collected '57 chevys.
